Noise, smoke, confined space, fear and an astonishing camaraderie were the overriding characteristics of the Blitz. Winston Churchill's Britain at War Experience reveals how Londoners lived as the city suffered a continuous bombardment by the German Luftwaffe. Visitors descend into the living museum a dilapidated lift to the life-like tube station air-raid shelter. Take a look at a host of fascinating pieces from the period including photos, rare documents, and gas masks. All the while you can hear the sounds of the era playing the background popular songs mingle with radio broadcasts and speeches from the world leaders of the time. The exhibition explores more than just the obvious effects of a bomb dropping. Theres a whole section devoted to rationing, food production and the Land Girls, not to mention the recreation of a string of shops in 1940s Southwark. The simulation of a street in the immediate aftermath of a bombing is particularly convincing and effective. For school trips they organise dressing up sessions so kids can try on helmets, uniforms and gas masks.
