Portcullis House, home to 210 MPs, is Parliament's newest building - it was officially opened in February 2001. Its prominent positioning opposite Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, above Westminster tube station and facing the river means the architectural design has been a hotly debated topic. Nonetheless, the design by architects Michael Hopkins and Partners earned them a RIBA award. With its distinctive aluminium bronze plate chimney turrets the six storey rectangular block is centered around a glass and oak beamed roofed courtyard with large trees rooted within it. Generally not open to the public, access can sometimes be gained via the annual London Open House Weekend which takes place in September.
