Paynes and Borthwick Wharf

Two wharves, Paynes, built in 1860, and Borthwick, built in 1934, both mostly demolished in 2004, have been incorporated into a £120 million riverside development. The Grade II listed arches of the old Thames-facing facade has been preserved in the modern day Borthwick Wharf which includes apartments, commercial and retail space, listed buildings, a landmark residential tower, art galleries, and private gardens. The site has had many past lives as a ship engine factory, supplying ship parts for many vessels including HMS Warrior - the first iron hulled warship in the Royal Navy - a meat processing and cold storage facility and a paper warehouse.
