This family-run restaurant does a sterling job of bringing the spirit of Eritrea to south London. Neither the nation itself nor her cuisine are well known, but it struck a chord with general East African flavours (chickpeas, cracked wheat etc) plus a little Eritrean mystery..
Being a former Italian colony, there were some standard pasta dishes on offer too, but we went for the traditional home-grown option which consisted of a collection of large, light, lemony pancakes topped with various pungent meat stews. We loved getting mucky eating with our hands, and it was a pleasure to lick your fingers after.
The atmosphere is really fantastic, especially after your meal when the traditionally-dressed staff starts wafting around incense and roasted coffee beans. Beware the moreish aromatic coffee though - it will keep you up all night.
