The Aghan Khan's Ismaili Centre in South Kensington is the place where the Ismaili community gather for social, cultural and primarily religious reasons, discussions and events - the Prayer Hall being the building's focal point and the triangular plot facing towards Mecca. Located opposite the Museum of Natural History and Victoria and Albert Museum since 1985, it occupies a significant cultural spot. The building also contains classsrooms, offices and a multi-purpose social hall variously used for art exhibitions. When it was first unveiled the building design - in the traditional Islamic colours of white, light grey and blue - was hailed as a welcome improvement to the area between Thurloe Place and Cromwell Road, replacing what had previously been a derelict site and a bit of an eyesore.
