The less publicised Northern Renaissance is the subject of an exhibition displaying more than 130 fine works from the 15th and 16th centuries at The Queen's Gallery at Buckingham Palace. While the Italian Renaissance gets all the press, Northern Europe was undergoing its own dramatic changes at the time. Albrecht Durer and Hans Holbein the Younger, two heavyweights of the time, represented by a number of works, are allocated a gallery each. Highlights include Durer's woodcut of an Indian rhinoceros, and Holbein's preparatory drawings which are displayed alongside the finished oil portraits. Lucas Cranach the Elder, an influential figure in Netherlandish art, was creating mythological paintings while Pieter Bruegel the Elder's the Massacre of the Innocents transforms a biblical scene to a contemporary setting. The exhibition may be "something of a jumble" but it is "a jumble of the highest quality art" (The Telegraph). Book tickets for The Northern Renaissance: Durer to Holbein at Buckingham Palace.
