A life-size ship decked out in flowers comes to shore in the oldest church in the City of London as part of the 2013 Mayor's Thames Festival. Adrift is artist Hew Locke's memorial to those unknown sailors who have lost their lives on the river and at sea. The twelve-foot piece by the British-Guyanese artist has been designed so that you, the traveller, can go on an imaginary voyage, culminating in the final journey whether over the River Styx, Viking funeral boats, or Ancient Egyptian funerary barques. Locke also imagines the boat as having been on a long journey, lost and abandoned up a jungle river where nature is slowly taking over. The artist will be in conversation at All Hallows by the Tower, the mariners' church, on Thursday 12th September for a free talk about the artwork.
