The Highbury Barn shopping parade in north London is a foodie hot spot with La Fromagerie, a good butcher, and Meek and Wild, a top-quality fishmonger run by Paul Meek who has two decades in the trade, learning the ropes at some of London's most famous fishmongers. After 14 years at Steve Hatt's fish shop in Islington, stints at James Knight's now closed fishmongers in Notting Hill and at Broadway Market's Fin and Flounder, Paul Meek has set up his own premises. Specialising in wild and sustainably caught fresh fish, Meek and Wild sources fish from Cornwall and from a speciality seafood provider near Inverness in Scotland, no wonder local food writer Nigel Slater is a customer. Farmed fish offerings are from Loch Duart in Scotland where some of London's top restaurants including Claridges, Maze and Quaglino's source their salmon. Smoked fish, crab meats, ready-made seafood platters, taramasalata and smoked mackerel pate, Japanese condiments and ingredients to make sushi, and Spanish ingredients from Brindisa are also available. But with over 40 varieties of fresh fish, beautifully presented on ice at the front of the shop, the whole sea bass, salmon and skate are the main attractions.
