The inner-city district of Walworth forms much of SE17, home to Old Kent Road which is famous for being the equal cheapest property on a classic London monopoly board and the only one in south London. John Smith House can be found on Walworth Road (renamed in memory of John Smith, who was leader of the Labour Party from 1992 up to his sudden death in 1994). A former headquarters for the Labour Party, the building was often seen in news reports at election times and in the background as people came and went from stormy meetings of the Labour Party National Executive Committee. Large amounts of regeneration and gentrification have been occurring in Walworth, including the proposed demolition of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, the newly built Strata tower, the proposed demolition of the Heygate and Aylesbury Estates and the transforming of St Mary's Churchyard as a new park. Famous one-time residents include Charlie Chaplin and Sir Michael Caine. More
