    The City, London

    City Hotels

As the historic centre of London, as well as its main financial centre, the City or 'Square Mile' is home to many of the Capital's best known sights: St Paul's Cathedral, the Monument, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the Barbican Centre, the Museum of London, the Bank of England… and just across the River via the Millennium Footbridge, Tate Modern and The Globe.

Its tall buildings may dominate London's skyline, but at street level history surrounds you: long stretches of Roman wall (London Wall), narrow medieval streets, Wren churches, the Inns of Court, neoclassical banking halls, authentic Victorian pubs and markets (Leadenhall).

No longer deserted in the evenings or at weekends, the City now boasts attractive new public spaces around the bases of the glass towers, and a shimmering new shopping mall, One New Change designed by Jean Nouvel, beside St Paul's.

City hotels, not surprisingly, are geared towards the business customer, which means good facilities and efficient service, as well as good deals at the weekend.

At Threadneedles you can stay in a former banking hall while the modern purpose-built Apex City of London Hotel by the Tower of London has now been joined by Apex London Wall Hotel. If you prefer a home-from-home when you travel, 196 Apartments are conveniently located opposite Liverpool Street Station.

Five Star luxury and chic contemporary styling can be had at Andaz London, formerly known as the Great Eastern Hotel, a grand Victorian buiding beside Liverpool Street Station. It also houses some of the area's best bars and restaurants.

For budget travellers rather than business travellers, there are some cheap London hotels serving the City, particularly in East London and Docklands which have fast direct links on the Central Line and the Docklands Light Railway respectively. The Ibis and Holiday Inn chains both have a strong presence in these areas.
